Nanango Shire Council
Modern Management
Nanango Shire Council is a progressive and forward-looking organisation.

We've adopted contemporary best practice management to ensure that we can provide Shire residents with responsive, quality services that also offer "best value for money".

If you ever need to deal with Council on any issue, your work will be handled by the Department that's been assigned with responsibility for that area.

How Nanango Shire Council Is Structured
Nanango Shire Council is one of the largest employers in the Shire and has a staff of close to sixty people.

We're also a forward-thinking Shire and in line with contemporary best practice we're structured in a "Client/Provider Partnership" model.

This model clearly separates our own business needs from our service delivery and community service obligations. It puts us in a better position to provide responsive, quality, "best value for money" services to the ratepayers and the local community we serve.

Each of Council's departments is run by a manager who is answerable to our Chief Executive Officer. But the CEO and all the departments are all ultimately answerable to the Mayor and Councillors. They provide the leadership, policy and strategic direction for the Shire.

Chief Executive Officer
Nanango Shire Council's Chief Executive Officer is Shane Gray.

Shane came to Nanango from Murgon when he was appointed Nanango Shire Council's Chief Executive Officer in November 2004.

Shane was formerly the Manager Corporate and Financial Services at Murgon Shire Council. He has extensive experience in local government and came to Council with an in-depth knowledge of both Nanango Shire and the South Burnett region as a whole.

As head of Nanango Shire's permanent staff our CEO is responsible for overseeing the work of the other personnel who provide Council services to ratepayers, as well as ensuring that the policies of the Shire's elected councillors are implemented.

You can contact our CEO by phoning (07) 4171 6800; by faxing (07) 4163 1729; by writing to PO Box 10, Nanango Q 4605; or via email.

Nanango Shire Council's Departments
Nanango Shire Council has four departments:

  • Finance and Administration Department
The Finance and Administration department manages the finances of Council. It looks after payroll, accounts, investments and rates. Its busiest periods are fiscal end of year and rates discount periods, though it's kept busy at all other times managing the financial affairs of the Shire.

  • Rates Department
Council's Rates Department is responsible for the efficient maintenance of Council's Rate and Property database and rates revenue recovery. Rates Department staff are on hand to help with any enquires pertaining to rates and other property information.

Nanango Shire Council issues rates notices twice a year (in February and August). You should contact our staff if you haven't received your biannual notice or if you need further information.

  • Community Services Department
Nanango Shire's Community Services Department - created in August 2000 - merges functions formerly carried out by our Building, Town Planning and Health Departments.

If you wish to obtain permits for building or renovation work; have questions about land use within the Shire; or have any issues that might impact on public health (eg: waste disposal, refuse collection, food outlet licensing, mosquito control, immunisation, cemeteries etc) the Community Services Department will be happy to assist you.

Nanango Shire's Engineering Department is responsible for infrastructure services and response throughout the Shire. It oversees all the areas of Council's operations that deliver services to Shire residents.

Libraries and Visitor Information Centres
In addition to Council's four Departments, Nanango Shire Council also operates three public libraries at Nanango, Blackbutt and Maidenwell. We also operate two Visitor Information Centres - one at Nanango and the other at Blackbutt.

The Shire's libraries are under the control of our Chief Librarian. Our Visitor Information Centres are operated by our Visitor Information Centre Managers. All these people report directly to our Chief Executive Officer.

You can consult our A to Z Index for more details about our libraries or our Visitor Information Centres, or simply use the search box at the top of this page.

Guiding Principles
Nanango Shire Council always strives to ensure that its functions and operations comply with legislation and deliver transparent, fair and equitable results. We do this through various forms of community interaction; by conducting open meetings; and by regular communication through various media.

Broader and higher impact strategic issues important to the future of the Shire are considered on the basis of a "whole of government approach" so that the welfare and interests of the entire community are addressed.

You can contact any of our Departments directly by phone or by email. Please consult our Nanango Shire Council Contacts Directory for current contact information.
